Ah! My Goddess watch order

Unlucky college student Keiichi Morisato dials a wrong number and reaches the Goddess Relief Office. The goddess Belldandy appears and grants him one wish; he wishes she'd stay with him forever, and it comes true. Kōsuke Fujishima's long-running manga became a 1993 OVA and film, a gag spin-off and a 2005 TV series with sequels.

First time? Watch the 2005 TV series, its two bonus episodes, then Flights of Fancy and Fighting Wings. The 1993 OVA and the 2000 movie are a separate, older version you can watch any time.

First-timer order

  1. Ah! My Goddess (TV) TV, 2005, 24 episodes

A from-scratch retelling, closer to the manga than the OVA: Belldandy moves in, Urd and Skuld follow, the demon Mara meddles, and the auto club and Keiichi's sister Megumi join in. Ends with the Lord of Terror arc. Episode 12.5, a recap, aired mid-season and can be skipped.

  2. Ah! My Goddess (episodes 25–26) Special, 2005, 2 episodes

Two extra episodes released on DVD after the TV run, set after episode 24 and before Flights of Fancy.

  3. Ah! My Goddess: Flights of Fancy TV, 2006, 22 episodes

The second season (Sorezore no Tsubasa) continues straight on from the first, after the Lord of Terror events. It doesn't follow the manga in order, and much of its later half is original to the anime.

  4. Flights of Fancy (episodes 23–24) Special, 2007, 2 episodes

Two more episodes that didn't air on TV and came out on DVD in 2007. The Japanese and English DVD sets include them as the end of the season.

  5. Ah! My Goddess: Fighting Wings Special, 2007, 2 episodes

A two-part TV special that follows Flights of Fancy and adapts the manga story that introduces Lind, a battle-hardened Valkyrie, and the creature known as the Angel Eater. Never released in English.

  6. Ah! My Goddess: Together Forever (2011 OVAs) (optional) OVA, 2011–13, 3 episodes

Three original episodes (Itsumo Futari de, Hunters & Hunters and DIVE! LIVE! LOVE!) bundled with manga volumes 42, 43 and 46, made by the TV staff and cast and set after Fighting Wings. Light standalone stories; never released in English. Optional.

  7. Ah! My Goddess (OVA) OVA, 1993–94, 5 episodes

The first adaptation, sold as Oh My Goddess! in English. Episodes 1–3 cover the manga's opening (Belldandy's arrival, then Urd and Skuld); episodes 4–5 are an original story. A separate continuity from the TV series, continued by the 2000 movie.

  8. Ah! My Goddess: The Movie Movie, 2000, 1 episode

A sequel to the OVA, set a few years after Keiichi and Belldandy meet, with an original story built around Belldandy's former teacher Celestin and the sorceress Morgan. Best after the OVA, though it mostly stands alone.

  9. The Adventures of Mini-Goddess (optional) TV, 1998–99, 48 episodes

Seven-minute gag shorts starring chibi versions of the goddesses. No continuity with anything else. Optional.

Story order

There are two separate continuities. The TV line runs from the 2005 series through Flights of Fancy, Fighting Wings and the 2011 OVAs. The older line is just the 1993 OVA and its sequel, the 2000 movie. Mini-Goddess is a gag spin-off with no place in either.

Explained

OVA or TV series: which should I watch?

The 2005 TV series is the fuller, more faithful version and the usual starting point. The 1993 OVA covers the same opening in five episodes with a 90s look, then goes its own way; the 2000 movie is its sequel. They're a separate continuity, so you can watch them before or after the TV series.

Is the 2000 movie connected to the TV series?

No. It follows the 1993 OVA, not the TV series, and tells an original story about Belldandy's former teacher Celestin. You can enjoy it after either version, since it re-establishes the characters.

What are all the extra episodes?

Episode 12.5 is a mid-season recap you can skip. Episodes 25–26 and Flights of Fancy 23–24 were DVD-only episodes that belong at the end of each season. Fighting Wings is a two-part sequel special, and the 2011 OVAs are short original stories that came with manga volumes.

Does the anime finish the story?

No. The manga ran until 2014 (48 volumes), but the TV anime stops with the Lind story in Fighting Wings, around the middle of the manga. No further anime was made after the 2011 OVAs. To get the ending, pick up the manga.

Is there an English dub?

The 1993 OVA (AnimEigo), the 2000 movie (Pioneer/Geneon) and Flights of Fancy (ADV, later Funimation) were released in English with dubs. Fighting Wings and the 2011 OVAs were never released in English. The older home video releases are out of print.
