Bungo Stray Dogs watch order
Orphan Atsushi Nakajima, who turns into a tiger without knowing it, is taken in by Yokohama's Armed Detective Agency, where every member is named after a famous author and wields an ability named after one of their works. Bones adapts Kafka Asagiri and Sango Harukawa's manga and Asagiri's prequel novels.
First time? Watch Seasons 1–5 in order on Crunchyroll, where the Walking Alone OVA is episode 25 and the film Dead Apple goes between Seasons 2 and 3. Every season from the second opens with a flashback arc; that's deliberate, so don't reorder them. The chibi spin-off Wan! is optional.
Story order
Timeline order: the Agency's founding (twelve years before), Dazai and Chuuya at fifteen (seven years before), the Dark Era (four years before), then the present. Good for a rewatch; for a first watch use release order, because each flashback is placed where its reveal lands.
- Season 4 episodes 38–40: Untold Origins
The earliest story in the timeline, twelve years before the present, from the novel The Untold Origins of the Detective Agency: Fukuzawa meets a fourteen-year-old Ranpo and the Agency is founded. Again, watch it here.
- Season 3 episodes 26–28: Fifteen
A three-episode flashback seven years before the main story, from the novel Dazai, Chuuya, Age Fifteen: how Dazai and Chuuya met, and how Mori took over the Port Mafia. The novel was first sold at Dead Apple's premiere, so watch the film first.
- Season 2 episodes 13–16: Dark Era
A four-episode flashback set four years earlier, adapting the novel Osamu Dazai and the Dark Era: Dazai in the Port Mafia, his friend Oda Sakunosuke, and why he left. Watch it here, not first; it's written as a reveal.
- Bungo Stray Dogs (Season 1)
Episodes 1–12: Atsushi joins the Agency and the Port Mafia sends Akutagawa after him (manga chapters 1–16). Episodes 6–7, the Azure Messenger case, come from the novel Osamu Dazai's Entrance Exam, moved into the present. The Guild arrives in the last episode.
- Season 2 episodes 17–24: Guild arc
Back to the present: Fitzgerald's Guild goes to war with both the Agency and the Mafia over Atsushi's bounty (chapters 17–37). Ends with the Moby Dick over Yokohama.
- Bungo Stray Dogs: Walking Alone (OVA, episode 25) (optional)
A stand-alone Kunikida episode bundled with manga volume 13, adapting chapter 40, which falls just after the Guild arc. Crunchyroll counts it as episode 25, so the season numbering below follows that. Canon but light; fine to skip.
- Bungo Stray Dogs: Dead Apple
A film written by Asagiri, set after Season 2: ability users across the world are dying by their own powers, and Shibusawa's fog descends on Yokohama. Not in the manga, but canon to the anime, and its backstory feeds straight into the Fifteen arc that opens Season 3.
- Season 3 episodes 29–37
The aftermath of the Guild war (chapters 38–45), including how Dazai joined the Agency, then the Cannibalism arc (chapters 46–53), in which Fyodor pits the Agency and the Mafia against each other.
- Season 4 episodes 41–50
The Perfect Crime case (41–42), then the Decay of Angels frame the Agency and the Hunting Dogs come after them (43–47), ending with the Sky Casino (48–50). Chapters 54–77.
- Season 5 episodes 51–61
Picks up the same night: Kamui's identity, the vampire outbreak, and the break-in at the Meursault prison (chapters 78–113). The ending was written with Asagiri while the manga was still mid-arc, and the anime stops here, 'to be continued'.
- Bungo Stray Dogs Wan! (optional)
Twelve eleven-minute episodes of chibi comedy based on the gag spin-off manga. Not canon and not needed; watch it whenever you want a break, ideally after Season 3 so you know the cast.
- Bungo Stray Dogs Wan! Season 2 (optional)
A second season of the chibi comedy spin-off, aired July to September 2026. Still non-canon and optional.
Release order
The order it came out, which is also the order Crunchyroll numbers it: Walking Alone is episode 25, so Season 3 starts at 26. Dead Apple sits between Seasons 2 and 3.

Explained
Why does every season start in the past?
Seasons 2, 3 and 4 each open with an arc adapted from one of Kafka Asagiri's prequel light novels (Dark Era, Fifteen and Untold Origins), and Season 1's Azure Messenger case comes from the Entrance Exam novel. They're placed at the start of each season on purpose, so the answers arrive just when you need them. Watching them chronologically first spoils the main story.
Why does Season 3 start at episode 26 on some sites?
Crunchyroll and the Japanese release count the Walking Alone OVA as episode 25, so Seasons 3, 4 and 5 are episodes 26–37, 38–50 and 51–61. Fan lists that leave the OVA out number them one lower. This guide uses the Crunchyroll numbering.
Is Dead Apple canon, and do I need it?
It isn't in the manga, but Asagiri wrote it and it's treated as part of the anime's continuity. Watch it between Seasons 2 and 3: the Fifteen novel was written as its companion piece, and Chuuya's backstory in the film pays off in Season 3's opening arc.
Is there filler?
No. Every episode adapts the manga or one of the canon novels. The only extras are Walking Alone (a manga chapter) and the Wan! chibi comedy, which is a separate gag series.
Where does the anime leave off, and is Season 6 coming?
Season 5 ends around chapter 113, so pick the manga up at volume 24. The manga wrapped up its first part in 2026 and went on hiatus, and as of October 2026 no sixth season had been announced; the only new anime has been Wan! Season 2.
