Fist of the North Star watch order

After nuclear war has turned the world to desert, Kenshiro, heir to the deadly martial art Hokuto Shinken, wanders the wasteland protecting the weak from warlords and rival masters. Buronson and Tetsuo Hara's 1980s classic has a long TV series, a 1986 film, a five-part 2000s retelling, a prequel series and a 2026 remake.

First time? Watch the 1984 TV series and Fist of the North Star 2, skipping the clip-show episodes. The 2026 remake is the modern alternative, but only its first part is out.

First-timer order

The two TV series are the full story as the manga tells it (minus its very last chapters). After that, the prequel and the remake are the best next steps.

  1. Fist of the North Star TV, 1984–87, 109 episodes

Toei's series covers the manga up to Kenshiro's final battle with Raoh: Shin (episodes 1–22), Rei, Jagi and Toki, the Holy Emperor Souther, and the Last General of Nanto. Anime-original filler is mostly episodes 9–10 and 14–21; episodes 41, 78–82, 98, 105 and 109 are clip shows you can skip.

  2. Fist of the North Star 2 TV, 1987–88, 43 episodes

The direct continuation (episodes 110–152 in some numbering), set years later after a time skip: the Celestial Emperor arc (110–122) and the Land of Shura (123–152). Episode 111 is filler. The manga's last chapters after Shura were never animated.

  3. New Fist of the North Star (optional) OVA, 2003–04, 3 episodes

Three hour-long OVAs based on a 1996 novel by Buronson and Hara rather than the manga, set after the main story. An optional extra once you've finished the TV series.

  4. Fist of the Blue Sky TV, 2006–07, 22 episodes

A prequel set in 1930s Shanghai, starring Kenshiro Kasumi, an earlier master of Hokuto Shinken who shares the hero's name. You don't need it for the main story; watch it after the TV series if you want more.

  5. Fist of the Blue Sky OVA OVA, 2007, 4 episodes

The four episodes that weren't broadcast on TV, released on DVD. They belong inside the series run, so watch them with Fist of the Blue Sky.

  6. Fist of the North Star (2026) TV, 2026, 14 episodes

A 40th-anniversary remake made in CG, starting the story over from the beginning. Part 1 (14 episodes) ran from April to June 2026 and reaches the Rei and Fang Clan arc; Part 2 is set for 2027.

Story order

The prequel Fist of the Blue Sky comes first in the timeline, then the main TV story. The 1986 film, the True Savior films and Legends of the Dark King are separate retellings, listed after it in the order they were made, and the 2026 remake starts over again. The DD parodies go last.

  8. Fist of the North Star (1986 film) (optional) Movie, 1986, 1 episode

A 110-minute retelling of roughly the first half of the TV story, from Shin to Ken's first fight with Raoh, rearranged and much gorier, with an unresolved ending. It isn't part of the TV continuity; watch it as an alternate take after episode 51 or skip it.

  9. Legend of Raoh: Chapter of Death in Love Movie, 2006, 1 episode

The first of the five-part Legends of the True Savior retelling. It retells the Holy Emperor Souther arc with Raoh at the centre, and adds an original character, Reina. It assumes you know the earlier story.

  10. Legend of Yuria OVA, 2007, 1 episode

True Savior part 2: a 65-minute OVA telling Yuria's side of the story, mostly new material, up to the Souther fight.

  11. Legend of Raoh: Chapter of Fierce Fight Movie, 2007, 1 episode

True Savior part 3, covering the Last General of Nanto arc and the final battle between Kenshiro and Raoh. Juza's fight is left out.

  12. Legend of Toki OVA, 2008, 1 episode

True Savior part 4: Toki's story, including his imprisonment in Cassandra and his duel with Raoh, with an original character, Sara.

  13. Zero: Legend of Kenshiro Movie, 2008, 1 episode

True Savior part 5, an original prequel set in the year between Kenshiro's defeat by Shin and the start of the series. It stands on its own but means more once you know the cast.

  14. Legends of the Dark King (optional) TV, 2008, 13 episodes

Raoh's rise to power, told in its own alternate continuity based on a spin-off manga; it reuses Reina from the True Savior films and Kenshiro barely appears. Optional.

  18. Hokuto no Ken: Ichigo Aji (optional) TV, 2015, 12 episodes

Aired as DD Hokuto no Ken 2: more DD parody, with each episode followed by an Ichigo Aji short that pokes fun at Souther and the Holy Emperor arc. Best after you know the original.

Explained

Which version should I watch?

The 1984 TV series plus Fist of the North Star 2 is the complete classic adaptation, 152 episodes in all. The 2026 remake retells the story in modern CG but only its first part is out. The 1986 film and the 2006–08 Legends of the True Savior films are condensed retellings for people who already know the story, not substitutes for it: the True Savior films skip Shin, Rei and Jagi entirely.

What can I skip in the TV series?

Episodes 41, 78–82, 98, 105 and 109 are clip shows. The longest anime-original stretch is episodes 9–10 and 14–21, early on in the Shin arc. In Fist of the North Star 2, only episode 111 is filler. The rest follows the manga closely.

Does the anime finish the manga?

Almost. Fist of the North Star 2 ends with the Land of Shura arc, and the manga's final chapters after that were never animated. New Fist of the North Star (2003) is a separate story based on a novel, not those chapters.

How does Fist of the Blue Sky connect?

It's a prequel set in 1930s Shanghai about Kenshiro Kasumi, an earlier successor of Hokuto Shinken. It explains some of the Hokuto lineage but isn't needed for the main story. Regenesis (2018) is its CG continuation.

What's next?

The 2026 remake's second part is scheduled for 2027 and continues from episode 15. Nothing else has been announced.
