Fruits Basket watch order

Orphaned high-schooler Tohru Honda ends up living with the Sohma family, thirteen of whom turn into animals of the Chinese zodiac when hugged by the opposite sex. Natsuki Takaya's manga was adapted twice: a 2001 series by Studio Deen that stops early, and a complete 2019–21 remake by TMS Entertainment.

First time? Watch the 2019 remake: 1st Season, 2nd Season, The Final, then the film Prelude. The 2001 series is an optional older version you can try afterwards.

First-timer order

The 2019 remake from start to finish, then Prelude. The 2001 series is last because it's an incomplete, looser version of the same early chapters: try it afterwards if you're curious, or skip it.

  1. Fruits Basket 1st Season TV, 2019, 25 episodes

The full remake starts over from chapter one with a new staff and Japanese cast. Tohru moves in with Shigure, Yuki and Kyo and meets more of the zodiac, building to the reveal of Kyo's true form near the end of the season.

  2. Fruits Basket 2nd Season TV, 2020, 25 episodes

Episodes 26–50. Goes past where the 2001 series stopped: the student council, Rin, and Akito's hold over the Sohmas, as Tohru starts searching for a way to break the curse.

  3. Fruits Basket: The Final TV, 2021, 13 episodes

Episodes 51–63 adapt the rest of the manga, from volume 17 to the end: the truth about Akito and the end of the curse. The conclusion of the story.

  4. Fruits Basket: Prelude Movie, 2022, 1 episode

An 88-minute film in three parts: about half an hour recapping the remake, a new prequel about Tohru's parents Kyoko and Katsuya (the bulk of the film), and a short new epilogue written by Takaya. Watch it after The Final; the recap and epilogue spoil the ending.

  5. Fruits Basket (2001) (optional) TV, 2001, 26 episodes

Studio Deen's original adaptation. It covers roughly the first third of the manga, loosely and with a lighter tone, and ends right after Kyo's true form is revealed, leaving the curse and the romance unresolved. A separate continuity; optional.

Release order

Everything in the order it came out. The 2001 series isn't part of the remake's story, so starting here means watching the opening chapters twice.

Explained

2001 or 2019: which one should I watch?

The 2019 series. It's a complete remake that adapts the whole manga in 63 episodes, and it was made with a new cast and staff at the manga author's request. The 2001 series covers only about the first third of the story, changes things along the way and ends without resolving the curse.

Is the 2019 version a sequel to the 2001 one?

No. It's a reboot that starts again from the first chapter. The first season retells, more faithfully, roughly what the 2001 series covered; from the 2nd Season on it's all material the 2001 series never reached.

Do I need to watch Prelude?

It isn't required, but fans of the series usually want it. About an hour of it is a new story about Tohru's mother Kyoko and how she met Katsuya, which the TV series only touches on, and it ends with a short new scene set after the finale. The opening half hour is a recap of the remake you can skip through.

Is there an English dub?

Yes, for everything. Funimation dubbed the 2001 series, and for the 2019 remake most of that English cast came back, including Laura Bailey as Tohru, Eric Vale as Yuki and Jerry Jewell as Kyo. Prelude is dubbed too. Both series and the film stream on Crunchyroll.

Will there be more anime?

Nothing has been announced as of October 2026. The remake adapted the whole manga. Takaya's sequel manga, Fruits Basket Another, about the next generation, hasn't been animated.
