Ghost in the Shell watch order
In a future where bodies can be fully cybernetic and brains are wired to the net, Major Motoko Kusanagi and her team hunt cybercriminals and hackers. Based on Masamune Shirow's manga, the anime is split into several separate continuities that each tell the Major's story their own way.
First time? Watch the 1995 film, then Stand Alone Complex, 2nd GIG and Solid State Society. After that, pick any other continuity: Innocence, Arise, SAC_2045 or the 2026 series.
Story order
Each continuity in its own order, one after another: Oshii's films, Stand Alone Complex, Arise, then the 2026 series. They don't share a timeline, so you can take the continuities in any order. Compilation films and the 2.0 remaster are left out.
- Ghost in the Shell
Mamoru Oshii's film, set in 2029. The Major hunts a mysterious hacker called the Puppet Master and questions what makes her human. Short, dense and the usual starting point.
- Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence
Oshii's sequel to the 1995 film, set in 2032. Batou and Togusa investigate gynoids that kill their owners. Watch it after the 1995 film; it doesn't connect to Stand Alone Complex.
- Stand Alone Complex
A separate TV continuity set in 2030. 'Complex' episodes (4–6, 9, 11 and 20–26) follow the Laughing Man hacker case; the rest are 'Stand Alone' cases. Each episode ends with a short Tachikomatic Days comedy bit.
- Stand Alone Complex 2nd GIG
Season 2, set in 2032. Section 9 is reinstated and goes up against the Individual Eleven terrorist group.
- SAC: Solid State Society
A feature-length TV film set in 2034, two years after 2nd GIG. The Major has left Section 9, now run by Togusa, when a hacker called the Puppeteer appears.
- SAC_2045
A Netflix series in full 3DCG, back in the Stand Alone Complex continuity after a long time skip. Section 9 has disbanded, and the Major and Batou are working as mercenaries.
- SAC_2045 Season 2
The conclusion of SAC_2045 and, for now, of the Stand Alone Complex continuity.
- Arise: Borders 1–4
A third continuity: four films of about an hour each, showing a younger Kusanagi before Section 9 exists and how she builds her team.
- Alternative Architecture, episodes 9–10 (Pyrophoric Cult)
The only new story in Alternative Architecture. It leads straight into The New Movie, so watch it after the Borders.
- Ghost in the Shell: The New Movie
The finale of Arise. It closes that continuity at roughly the point where the 1995 film's story starts, though the two aren't the same continuity.
- The Ghost in the Shell (2026)
A brand-new adaptation of the original manga by Science SARU, set in 2029. Its own continuity, so it works as a fresh starting point too.
Release order
Everything in the order it came out, including the compilation films and the 2.0 remaster (all optional). A good way to go if you want to see the franchise develop.

Explained
Where do I start?
Most guides say the 1995 film: it's short, it's the most famous entry, and it sets up the world. Stand Alone Complex is the natural next step and the largest body of work. The 2026 series is a fresh adaptation of the manga, so it's also a fine place to begin.
Are the series connected?
Not really. The Oshii films, Stand Alone Complex, Arise and the 2026 series are separate continuities with the same core cast, each retelling who the Major is. Innocence follows the 1995 film; Solid State Society and SAC_2045 follow Stand Alone Complex. Arise is a prequel-style reimagining that nods to the 1995 film without being part of it.
Borders or Alternative Architecture?
Either. Alternative Architecture's first eight episodes are the four Borders films re-edited for TV, and only episodes 9–10 (Pyrophoric Cult) are new. Watch the Borders then episodes 9–10, or all of Alternative Architecture, and finish with The New Movie.
Do I need the compilation films?
No. The Laughing Man and Individual Eleven condense the two Stand Alone Complex seasons' main arcs, and Sustainable War and The Last Human recut the two SAC_2045 seasons with a few new scenes. Watch them instead of the series if you're short on time, not as well.
Original 1995 film or 2.0? What about the 2017 film?
Watch the 1995 original. 2.0 swaps some scenes for CG, recolors the film and recasts the Puppet Master's voice, and is best treated as a curiosity. The 2017 film is a Hollywood live-action remake, so it isn't listed here. The 2026 series finished in September 2026 and no continuation has been announced.
