Hayate the Combat Butler watch order
Sold to the yakuza by his parents to cover their debts, 16-year-old Hayate Ayasaki ends up as the live-in butler of Nagi Sanzenin, a rich, reclusive girl who thinks he just confessed his love to her. A parody-heavy comedy based on Kenjiro Hata's manga.
First time? Watch Season 1 and Season 2 (Hayate the Combat Butler!!), then the film Heaven Is a Place on Earth, Can't Take My Eyes Off You and Cuties, which tell their own original story.
Story order
There's no single timeline. Season 1 and Season 2 are two takes on the manga (Season 2 retells parts of it more faithfully), while the film, Season 3 and Cuties form one original story of their own. Watching them in release order keeps each line together.
- Hayate the Combat Butler (Season 1)
SynergySP's first series covers the early manga loosely, with many anime-original episodes and characters, lots of parody and its own happy ending. Season 2 ignores most of it.
- Hayate the Combat Butler!! OVA: Atsu ga Natsuize – Mizugi-hen! (optional)
A 27-minute beach outing interrupted by a vengeful spirit, made by the Season 2 studio (J.C.Staff) and released a month before it. Often counted as Season 2's episode 0; a light side story you can skip.
- Hayate the Combat Butler!! (Season 2)
J.C.Staff's season sticks much closer to the manga. It restarts the timeline about a month after Hayate becomes Nagi's butler and adapts manga arcs Season 1 skipped; only the second half of the last episode is anime-original.
- Hayate the Combat Butler! Heaven Is a Place on Earth
An original story by Kenjiro Hata, set at the end of summer break at Nishizawa's country house, where the spirit of Hayate's grandmother tries to split Hayate and Nagi up. It starts the Manglobe-made line that continues in Season 3; the home-video "+99" cut adds about eight minutes.
- Hayate the Combat Butler: Can't Take My Eyes Off You (Season 3)
An anime-original story Hata wrote for the anime (the manga paused while he worked on it), set a month after the film and built around the cursed pocket watch Black Camellia. It doesn't continue Season 2's manga material.
- Hayate the Combat Butler: Cuties (Season 4)
An anthology set after Season 3: most episodes focus on one heroine (Nagi, Hinagiku, Ayumu, Maria and others). Episodes 11–12 are a two-parter that wraps up the Black Camellia story from Season 3.
- Hayate the Combat Butler! OVA (2014) (optional)
Three episodes for the manga's 10th anniversary, one bundled with each of manga volumes 41–43. They adapt manga chapters the TV series never covered, pairing two heroines per episode. Standalone extras.
Release order
The order everything came out, which is also how MyAnimeList's franchise list runs it. The two OVAs are optional side stories.

Explained
Why does Season 2 seem to restart the story?
Season 1 ran ahead of the manga with many anime-original episodes and changed the timeline. Season 2, made by a different studio, starts again about a month after Hayate becomes Nagi's butler and follows the manga more closely, so some events clash with Season 1 (Hinagiku and Ayumu meet differently, for example). Treat it as the more faithful take rather than a direct sequel.
Are the movie, Can't Take My Eyes Off You and Cuties canon?
They're official, and Hata wrote the story, but they're a separate line from the manga. The film's events lead into Season 3, which is set a month later, and Cuties follows Season 3 and finishes its Black Camellia plot in episodes 11–12. You can enjoy them after Season 2 without them contradicting what you've seen.
Is Hayate the Combat Butler dubbed in English?
Not for North America. Bandai's Season 1 DVDs and Sentai Filmworks' later releases are all Japanese with subtitles. An English dub made for Animax Asia aired in Southeast Asia, but it was never released on disc or streaming.
Where do I read the manga after the anime?
The anime covers only the first part of a long manga, which ended in 2017 after 570 chapters (52 volumes). Because Season 1 and the later original seasons both change things, starting the manga from chapter 1 is the cleanest option. Viz publishes it in English.
Will there be more Hayate anime?
Nothing has been announced. The manga finished in 2017; a 27-volume perfect edition with new bonus pages started in Japan in 2023.
