The Irregular at Magic High School watch order

In a world where magic is a science, Tatsuya Shiba enrolls at First High as a lowly second-tier "Weed" student while his sister Miyuki is the top "Bloom", but Tatsuya is hiding far more power than his grades suggest. Tsutomu Sato's light novels became three TV seasons, two films, a prequel special and a Miyuki-focused spin-off.

First time? Watch Season 1, the Reminiscence Arc special, the Visitor Arc (with The Girl Who Summons the Stars after its episode 11), Season 3 and the Yotsuba Succession Arc film. The Honor at Magic High School is an optional retelling.

First-timer order

Novel order: the Reminiscence Arc is volume 8, which sits between Season 1 and the Visitor Arc, and it lands better once you know Tatsuya and Miyuki. The film goes after Visitor Arc episode 11. Save The Honor for last, if at all.

  1. The Irregular at Magic High School TV, 2014, 26 episodes

Madhouse adapts light novel volumes 1–7 (skipping the side-story volume 5) in three arcs: Enrollment (eps 1–7), Nine Schools Competition (8–18) and Yokohama Disturbance (19–26).

  2. The Irregular at Magic High School: Reminiscence Arc Special, 2021, 1 episode

A 71-minute special adapting volume 8: three years before Season 1, when Miyuki still treated Tatsuya as little more than a servant, a family trip to Okinawa changes everything between them. The earliest point in the story, but it works best once you know the characters.

  3. The Irregular at Magic High School: Visitor Arc (episodes 1–11) TV, 2020, 11 episodes

Season 2, by 8bit, adapting volumes 9–11: Angelina Kudou Shields (Lina) arrives from the USNA as an exchange student just as a mysterious attacker starts leaving magicians drained of blood. Episode 11 ends the school year.

  4. The Irregular at Magic High School The Movie: The Girl Who Summons the Stars (optional) Movie, 2017, 1 episode

An original film set during the spring break at the end of the Visitor Arc, at the family villa in the Ogasawara Islands, with Lina in the cast. It came out three years before the Visitor Arc, but it's set partway through that season's episode 11, so watch it after episode 11. Optional side story.

  5. The Irregular at Magic High School: Visitor Arc (episodes 12–13) TV, 2020, 2 episodes

A two-part story about a party at an offshore tower and a terrorist threat, which introduces Miyuki's new guardian, Minami Sakurai. Watch it after the film.

  6. The Irregular at Magic High School Season 3 TV, 2024, 13 episodes

Tatsuya's second year: Double Seven (eps 1–4, volume 12), Steeplechase (5–8, volume 13) and Ancient City Insurrection (9–13, volumes 14–15).

  7. The Irregular at Magic High School The Movie: Yotsuba Succession Arc Movie, 2026, 1 episode

Picks up straight after Season 3 and adapts volume 16, as the Yotsuba family names its next head. Released in Japan in May 2026, with Crunchyroll screenings in North America in November 2026. It closes "Part 1" of the anime.

  8. The Honor at Magic High School (optional) TV, 2021, 13 episodes

A spin-off by studio Connect, from the Honor Student manga, that retells Season 1's Enrollment and Nine Schools Competition arcs from Miyuki's side. Not a sequel and not needed. Optional.

  9. Yoku Wakaru Mahouka! (optional) ONA, 2014, 6 episodes

Six three-minute chibi shorts from 2014 that explain the show's magic system and setting. Handy if the jargon loses you, but not story. Optional.

Story order

Chronological. The Reminiscence Arc is set three years before Season 1. The Honor retells Season 1's first 18 episodes, so it sits alongside them. The film takes place during the spring break after Visitor Arc episode 11.

Explained

Where is Season 2?

Season 2 is called the Visitor Arc (Raihousha-hen). It came out six years after Season 1, in 2020, and has a different studio (8bit), so it's easy to miss. Season 3 followed in 2024.

The Irregular or The Honor?

The Irregular (Rettousei) is the main story. The Honor (Yuutousei, "honor student") is a spin-off from a manga that retells the first two arcs from Miyuki's side. It isn't a sequel, and you can skip it.

Is the 2017 movie canon?

It's an original story, not from the novels, but the anime deliberately fits it into the timeline: Visitor Arc episode 11 sets up the spring break it takes place in. Watch it there, after episode 11, since it features Lina from the Visitor Arc. Skipping it loses nothing from the main plot.

Why does the anime skip volumes?

Volume 5 is a book of side stories and was never animated. Volume 8 was skipped by the Visitor Arc and later made into the 2021 Reminiscence Arc special.

What comes next?

The Yotsuba Succession Arc film (2026) ended what the committee calls Part 1 of the anime. A Part 2 that continues adapting Sato's novels was announced in June 2026, with no date, format or studio yet.
