Monogatari watch order

Koyomi Araragi keeps running into girls with supernatural problems, and the story jumps around in time on purpose.

First time? Watch in release order, starting with Bakemonogatari. The story is written to be seen out of order, and the flashbacks land best that way.

Story order

Best on a rewatch. The Second Season's five arcs overlap each other in time, so watch them as they aired. Koyomimonogatari spans the whole year; this is where most guides place it.

  1. Kizumonogatari I: Tekketsu Movie, 2016

Spring break, where it all begins.

  2. Kizumonogatari II: Nekketsu Movie, 2016
  3. Kizumonogatari III: Reiketsu Movie, 2017
  4. Nekomonogatari (Black) TV, 2012, 4 episodes

    Golden Week, before Bakemonogatari.

  5. Bakemonogatari TV, 2009, 15 episodes

Where everyone starts. The last three episodes were released online.

  6. Nisemonogatari TV, 2012, 11 episodes
  7. Monogatari Series Second Season TV, 2013, 26 episodes

Five arcs: Nekomonogatari White, Kabukimonogatari, Otorimonogatari, Onimonogatari and Koimonogatari. Episodes 6, 11 and 16 are recaps you can skip.

  8. Tsukimonogatari TV, 2014, 4 episodes
  9. Owarimonogatari TV, 2015, 12 episodes
  10. Koyomimonogatari ONA, 2016, 12 episodes

Twelve short stories, one for each month of the school year.

  11. Owarimonogatari Second Season TV, 2017, 7 episodes
  12. Zoku Owarimonogatari TV, 2018, 6 episodes

Released in theaters first, then on TV.

  13. Hanamonogatari TV, 2014, 5 episodes

    Set after Araragi graduates.

  14. Monogatari Series: Off & Monster Season ONA, 2024

    New arcs set after graduation.

Explained

Why the order is weird

The novels were written out of chronological order, with prequels revealing things the earlier books kept hidden. The anime follows the novels, so the first thing you watch, Bakemonogatari, is actually the third chunk of the timeline.

Kizumonogatari: first or later?

Kizumonogatari is the very start of the story, but it was animated years after Bakemonogatari and assumes you know the characters. Starting with Bakemonogatari keeps its mysteries intact; starting with Kizu gives you the spring break events up front.
