Psycho-Pass watch order
In 22nd-century Japan, the Sibyl System scans everyone's mind for criminal intent, and police carry guns that only fire on people it judges dangerous. Rookie Inspector Akane Tsunemori learns what the system really is. An original sci-fi crime series from Production I.G.
First time? Watch in release order: Season 1, Season 2, The Movie, the three Sinners of the System films, Season 3 and First Inspector, then Providence.
First-timer order
Release order without the Extended Edition. Providence also works right before Season 3, where it falls in the story; watching it last keeps Season 3's opening mysteries intact.
- Psycho-Pass
Akane joins Division 1 alongside the Enforcer Shinya Kogami and hunts Shogo Makishima, a man the Sibyl System can't judge. Set in 2112–13. Written by Gen Urobuchi.
- Psycho-Pass 2
A year and a half later, Akane leads a reshuffled Division 1 against Kirito Kamui, a man invisible to Sibyl's scanners. Introduces Mika Shimotsuki and Teppei Sugo. Set in late 2114.
- Psycho-Pass: The Movie
Japan starts exporting the Sibyl System, and Akane is sent to the Southeast Asia Union after terrorists there lead back to Kogami. Set in 2116.
- Sinners of the System Case 1: Crime and Punishment
Shimotsuki and Ginoza escort a suspect back to a facility for latent criminals in Aomori and uncover what's going on there. A one-hour film, set in early 2117.
- Sinners of the System Case 2: First Guardian
A prequel set in 2112, before Season 1: Enforcer Tomomi Masaoka investigates a drone attack on the Ministry of Defense, tied to Teppei Sugo's military past. Released second, and best watched that way.
- Sinners of the System Case 3: On the Other Side of Love and Hate
Kogami, still wandering after The Movie, protects a busload of refugees in a small South Asian country and a girl named Tenzing who wants revenge. Set in late 2117.
- Psycho-Pass 3
Two new Inspectors, Arata Shindo and Kei Mikhail Ignatov, take over Division 1 in 2120 as Japan opens up to immigrants. Eight hour-long episodes that end mid-story.
- Psycho-Pass 3: First Inspector
The conclusion of Season 3, not a side story: the mastermind behind Season 3's cases attacks the Public Safety Bureau itself. Shown in Japanese cinemas and streamed elsewhere as three 45-minute parts.
- Psycho-Pass: Providence
Made for the 10th anniversary but set in 2118, between Sinners of the System and Season 3. Akane, now Chief Inspector, faces a foreign paramilitary group after a professor's research. Explains how things stand at the start of Season 3.
Story order
By in-universe date: First Guardian (2112), Season 1 (2112–13), Season 2 (2114), The Movie (2116), Crime and Punishment (early 2117), Case 3 (late 2117), Providence (2118), then Season 3 and First Inspector (2120). Not recommended for a first watch, because First Guardian leans on characters introduced later.
- Sinners of the System Case 2: First Guardian

- Psycho-Pass Extended Edition (optional)
Season 1 re-edited into 11 hour-long episodes, with a few minutes of new material per episode and touched-up effects. Same story, so watch either this or the original, not both.

Explained
Release order or chronological order?
Release order for a first watch. The only real prequel, Sinners of the System Case 2, is set before Season 1 but is built around Teppei Sugo from Season 2 and Masaoka from Season 1, so it works best after both. The Sinners films came out in the order 1, 2, 3, but in story order Case 2 comes first.
Original Season 1 or the Extended Edition?
Either. The 2014 Extended Edition packs the same 22 episodes into 11 hour-long ones, adds a few minutes of new material to each and touches up some effects. The story doesn't change, so pick whichever your streaming service has.
Is Season 2 canon? Can I skip it?
It's canon, and later entries build on it: Mika Shimotsuki and Teppei Sugo come from Season 2, and so do important changes to Sibyl. It's generally seen as weaker than Season 1. Gen Urobuchi wrote Season 1 but only supervised Season 2, which was written by Tow Ubukata; Urobuchi co-wrote The Movie.
Where does Providence go?
It came out in 2023, after Season 3 and First Inspector, but takes place in 2118, before Season 3. Season 3 opens with Akane's situation unexplained, and Providence fills that in. Watch it either right before Season 3 or at the very end.
Is there more coming?
No new Psycho-Pass anime had been announced as of autumn 2026. Providence (2023) is the most recent entry.
