Rascal Does Not Dream watch order
Sakuta Azusagawa meets actress Mai Sakurajima wandering a library in a bunny-girl outfit, unseen by everyone but him. One by one he helps the girls around him through 'Adolescence Syndrome', strange events born from teenage stress. CloverWorks adapts Hajime Kamoshida's light novels.
First time? Watch in release order: the 2018 TV series, the three films Dreaming Girl, Sister Venturing Out and Knapsack Kid, then the 2025 season Santa Claus. The films are main story, not extras.
Story order
Each entry adapts the next light novels in sequence, so story order is the same as release order.
- Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai
Light novels 1–5 in five arcs: Mai (episodes 1–3), Tomoe (4–6), Rio (7–8), Nodoka (9–10) and Kaede (11–13). The last episode sets up the first film.
- Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dreaming Girl
A 90-minute film adapting novels 6 and 7, which resolves the Shoko Makinohara mystery the TV series sets up. Essential: it's the climax of the first story.
- Rascal Does Not Dream of a Sister Venturing Out
A 73-minute film adapting novel 8: Kaede reveals she wants to go to Sakuta's high school, and he helps her take the step. It closes out her arc from the TV series.
- Rascal Does Not Dream of a Knapsack Kid
A 75-minute film adapting novel 9, released in Japan six months after Sister Venturing Out: Sakuta arranges for Kaede to see their long-hospitalized mother while his own Adolescence Syndrome flares up. The end of the high-school part of the series.
- Rascal Does Not Dream of Santa Claus
The second TV season, the university arc, adapting novels 10–13: Uzuki (Lost Singer), Ikumi Akagi (Nightingale, from episode 4), Juri Himeji (His Student, from episode 8) and the mysterious Toko Kirishima (Santa Claus, from episode 11). Follows directly from Knapsack Kid.
- Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dear Friend
The final film, adapting the last two novels (14 and 15) and billed as the series finale. It opens in Japanese cinemas on 16 October 2026; an international release hasn't been dated yet.
Release order
Everything in the order it came out. There are no OVAs, recaps or side stories to fit in.

Explained
Are the movies canon? Can I skip them?
Don't skip them. None of the films are recaps or side stories: each one adapts the next light novel. Dreaming Girl resolves the Shoko mystery from the TV series, Sister Venturing Out finishes Kaede's story, and Knapsack Kid leads straight into the Santa Claus season, which assumes you've seen all three.
Is Santa Claus season 2?
Yes, though it isn't called that. Rascal Does Not Dream of Santa Claus (2025) is the second TV season, set once Sakuta has started university, and picks up right after Knapsack Kid.
Where do I start reading the light novels?
After the 2018 TV series alone, read from volume 6. After Santa Claus, start at volume 14, Girlfriend. The main series is complete in 15 volumes, and the Dear Friend film adapts the last two, so after it there's nothing left but side material.
Is anything else coming after Dear Friend?
Dear Friend is billed as the finale, and no further anime has been announced. It opens in Japan on 16 October 2026; the earlier films reached cinemas outside Japan months after their Japanese release and later streamed on Crunchyroll, which also streams both TV seasons.
