The Rising of the Shield Hero watch order

Naofumi Iwatani is summoned to another world as one of four legendary heroes, but the Shield Hero is the weakest of them and is framed for a crime within days. With the demi-human Raphtalia and the bird-girl Filo, he fights the waves of monsters threatening the world on his own terms. Based on Aneko Yusagi's light novels.

First time? Watch Seasons 1 to 4 in order. There are no movies, OVAs or spin-off anime to fit in, and none of the seasons can be skipped.

Release order

Release order is also story order: four seasons in one continuity, each picking up where the last stopped.

  1. The Rising of the Shield Hero TV, 2019, 25 episodes

Naofumi is framed by Princess Malty, buys Raphtalia and survives the first Wave (1–3), then hatches Filo, meets Princess Melty and faces Glass at a later Wave (4–13), then goes on the run from the Church of the Three Heroes until the queen returns and clears his name (14–21). The Cal Mira islands and the Glass and L'Arc fights close the season (23–25). Adapts light novels 1–5.

  2. The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 2 TV, 2022, 13 episodes

The awakened Spirit Tortoise, one of the guardian beasts, attacks Melromarc, and the fight pulls Naofumi into Kizuna's world, where Glass and L'Arc come from. Episode 13 is largely a recap with a short epilogue. Squeezes light novels 6–9 into one season, so it moves fast.

  3. The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 3 TV, 2023, 12 episodes

Picks up right after Season 2. Naofumi recruits fighters such as Sadeena, Fohl and Atla, and tracks down the three other Cardinal Heroes, who have gone missing after their failures. It ends with assassins from Q'ten Lo targeting Raphtalia. Adapts light novels 10–12.

  4. The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 4 TV, 2025, 12 episodes

Naofumi goes to the demi-human nation of Siltvelt, where he's hailed as a savior (1–5), then to Q'ten Lo, where Raphtalia becomes the face of a revolution (6–12). Starts with light novel 13.

Explained

Can I skip Season 2?

No. It's the only adaptation of light novels 6–9, and Season 3 picks up straight from volume 10. It introduces the guardian beasts, Kizuna and the world Glass and L'Arc come from, all of which later seasons build on.

Why does Season 2 feel rushed?

It covers four light novel volumes in 13 episodes, and one episode is mostly recap. It was the only season with a different director (Masato Jinbo) and a co-studio, DR Movie, and its pacing and changes to the source drew criticism. Seasons 3 and 4 went back to Kinema Citrus alone under director Hitoshi Haga. If the Spirit Tortoise and Kizuna's world arcs felt thin, light novels 6–9 tell them in full.

Light novel, web novel or manga?

The anime follows the light novels. Shield Hero began as a web novel, which the light novels rewrote, and the manga adapts the light novels but is far behind the anime. Fans of the books often say Naofumi is more bitter there than in the anime.

Is there anything else to watch?

There are no Shield Hero movies, OVAs or spin-off anime. Naofumi, Raphtalia and Filo do appear in Isekai Quartet from its second season (2020) on, a chibi crossover comedy with KonoSuba, Overlord and Re:Zero that isn't part of the story. The Reprise of the Spear Hero spin-off exists only as novels and manga.

Is there a Season 5?

Yes. It was announced right after Season 4 ended in September 2025, and the first trailer, shown at Anime Expo in July 2026, set it for 2027 on Crunchyroll, again from Kinema Citrus. No exact date had been announced as of autumn 2026.
