Spice and Wolf watch order
Travelling merchant Kraft Lawrence finds Holo, a centuries-old wolf goddess, asleep in his cart and agrees to take her home to the north, haggling and scheming through trade deals along the way. Isuna Hasekura's light novels were adapted twice: a 2008–09 anime that ran two seasons, and a 2024 remake that starts over.
First time? Watch the 2024 remake, Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf. It covers more of the story than the original and continues in 2027. The 2008–09 series is worth a look afterwards, especially its two side-story OVAs.
First-timer order
The remake first: it tells the story so far in one continuous run and is the version that's continuing. The original series afterwards, for its different take and the two OVAs the remake doesn't include.
- Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf
A full remake by Passione that starts over from volume 1 and adapts volumes 1–4, including the volume 4 arc the original skipped. Takeo Takahashi, who directed the original, returns as chief director, and Jun Fukuyama and Ami Koshimizu return as Lawrence and Holo.
- Spice and Wolf
The original series by Imagin, adapting light novel volume 1 (episodes 1–6) and volume 2 (episodes 8–13): Lawrence meets Holo and gets caught up in a silver-coin scheme and then a risky armour deal. Episode 7 is a side story that never aired on TV and came out on DVD; watch it in its numbered spot.
- Spice and Wolf II: Wolf and the Amber Melancholy (optional)
"Episode 0" of Season II: a short side story released with a picture book a few months before the season aired. It sits between the two seasons. Optional, and missing from some streaming services.
- Spice and Wolf II
The second season, now by Brain's Base and Marvy Jack, adapting volume 3 (episodes 1–6) and volume 5 (episodes 7–12). It skips volume 4, and the original anime ends here.
- Spice and Wolf II Specials (optional)
Two three-minute Holo shorts from the Season II Blu-ray volumes. Light extras only.
Release order
Everything in the order it came out: the original two seasons with their extras, then the 2024 remake. The remake isn't a sequel; it retells the story from the start.

Explained
Original or remake?
They're two separate adaptations of the same novels, and you don't need both. The 2024 remake covers volumes 1–4 in 25 episodes, keeps the original's director and lead voice actors, and is the version getting a sequel. The 2008–09 series covers volumes 1, 2, 3 and 5, so it skips an arc and stops at a point the remake hasn't reached yet.
Is the remake Season 3?
No. Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf starts again from Lawrence and Holo's first meeting. It doesn't continue from the 2009 season.
What's missing from the original?
Volume 4, the arc about a remote village and its pagan god, was never animated until the remake. If you watched the original and want to switch to the novels, read volume 4 and then pick up from volume 6. The original's episode 7 and the Season II "episode 0" OVA are side stories that the remake doesn't redo.
What's next?
A second season of the remake has been announced for 2027, with Passione, the main staff and the lead cast returning. The novels go on much further, and there's a sequel series, Wolf & Parchment, about Lawrence and Holo's daughter, which hasn't been animated.
Sub or dub?
Both versions have English dubs, and Brina Palencia (Holo) and J. Michael Tatum (Lawrence) from the original Funimation dub came back for the remake's Crunchyroll dub.
