Sword Art Online watch order
Kirito and Asuna are trapped in a virtual-reality game where dying in the game means dying for real, and later get pulled into a string of other virtual worlds.
First time? Watch in release order: Sword Art Online, SAO II, Ordinal Scale, then Alicization. Save the Progressive films for after.
Story order
The Progressive films go after episode 2, where Season 1 jumps ahead past the early floors. Gun Gale Online Alternative is a separate side story; put it anywhere after SAO II. Integral Domain is left out until its story is known.
- Sword Art Online, episodes 1–2
The game starts and the first floor is cleared.
- Progressive: Aria of a Starless Night
Retells Aincrad's first floor from Asuna's point of view, based on the Progressive novels.
- Progressive: Scherzo of Deep Night
Sequel to Aria. Asuna and Kirito move on to the second floor.
- Unanswered//butterfly (optional)
A 3DCG film with two new leads, Rex and Emirun, set on Aincrad's third floor. It first came bundled with the Echoes of Aincrad game. Optional.
- Sword Art Online, episodes 3–25
The rest of Aincrad, then Fairy Dance.
- Extra Edition (optional)
Mostly a recap of Season 1, plus a short new story about an underwater quest in ALfheim Online. Optional.
- Sword Art Online II
Kirito investigates deaths linked to the gun game Gun Gale Online, then returns to ALfheim for two shorter arcs.
- Ordinal Scale
An original story by the series' author, set between SAO II and Alicization. Watch it before Alicization.
- Alicization
Kirito wakes up in Underworld, a new virtual world, with no memory of how he got there.
- Alicization – War of Underworld
Direct continuation of Alicization.
- War of Underworld, Part 2
The end of the Alicization story.
- Gun Gale Online Alternative

Explained
Where do the Progressive films go?
They retell the first two floors of Aincrad in much more detail, from Asuna's side. Season 1 covers the first floor in episodes 1–2 and then skips ahead, so story order puts the films right after episode 2. Some first-timer guides still suggest saving them until after the main series.
Do I need Ordinal Scale?
Yes, if you're continuing to Alicization. It's set between SAO II and Alicization, and watch guides treat it as part of the main story rather than a side film.
What can I skip?
Extra Edition is mostly a recap. The TV seasons also have recap episodes (such as Alicization's Recollection and War of Underworld's Reflection) that are safe to skip. Gun Gale Online Alternative and Unanswered//butterfly are side stories with their own leads.
